Chapter Eight

“Duncan wants us to fight,” Maddox said. It wasn’t a question. He’d heard what Quinten had said as clear as day, and he didn’t need it repeated to him, but he just needed a moment to take in what he’d heard.

It was a lot, considering he’d hoped to never have to get into a blood match ever again. And Quinten had told him that it would never happen to him so long as he lived in this castle.

“Yes, but not you. You turned down the offer to be a warrior,” Quinten said quickly. “So don’t even worry about it. You don’t have to do anything.”

He was clearly worried. About the fight? About whether or not Maddox would be hurt?

Or whether Maddox would realize that he was under suspicion from Duncan?

That was the only thing this could mean. Duncan knew something was off, so he wanted to test their loyalty to him.

It was kind of brilliant. Maddox had to give the high dragon that much. If any of his warriors defeated Maddox or Chris in a match designed to show loyalty, then they would have no choice but to consider Duncan as their alpha. Duncan didn’t even have to do the fighting. One of his men had to do it. The switch would be turned, and loyalties would be changed.

Maddox wasn’t worried about the possibility of being hurt. He was an alpha, for God’s sake. He knew he could handle one more violent match. What irked him was that he was already loyal. Quinten was his alpha, and that was the way it was going to stay. He could fight against the high dragon himself, the leader of this clan, and that wouldn’t change. He would still be loyal to Quinten and only to him. Not Duncan, not Clyde, not anyone else.

Chris, however, well, that was another matter. The man might choose to fight, banking on the fact that he could possibly win, but there was still the chance he would lose.

If Chris chose not to fight, then that would just prove in Duncan’s eyes that he’d never been loyal in the first place. He and Maddox could be executed for that.

He looked into Quinten’s eyes, his worried, handsome eyes. Would Quinten allow him to be put to death? Did he care that much? Did he have that much say?

He needed to think of something to do and quickly. “When’s this fight to take place?” he asked.

“Today,” Quinten replied. “Cailean’s telling Chris about it now. I don’t know who you both would be expected to go up against. Not that you’re going to be fighting at all, so don’t worry about it.”

“What if I want to fight?”

“I said you don’t have to. I know you don’t like the fights, so you don’t have to play tough about this.”

That annoyed the hell out of him. “Who said I was playing tough? I might want the exercise.”

Quinten shook his head. “Maddox, please don’t do this. We talked about this. I know you didn’t like the alpha fights you had to do at Clyde’s pack.
